host file

I have done a default installation of Netware 5.1, I have choosed almost the whole hd to be sys.
I am trying now to install a program which wants me to check the /etc/host file which is supposed to be found in SYS, the strange thing is that when I open my Windows explorer and look in the two new drives system on F: and public on Z: both on sys, I do not have any directory called ETC, and no host file either. But if I open Console1 and browse SYS I can see a directory SYS and in this a file called host.
When I double click on this file I get a gui with some option, I  thought that just as in windows I would get a doc file which I could just update with the local boxs name and ip address.
Any ideas
Thank you.

if you browes files from console1 on your server you will see all files and folders, but if you just login from your workstation with default rights, you might not see sys:\etc

Test 1
I logged in the Winxp box locally with administrator rights.
I click on the N in the taskbar down in the right. I choose, Netware Login.
I login, I go to winexplorer and I see the two new drives, System and Public, both on sys. I do not see ETC there.
I click on Console 1, I browse SYS and I see ETC.

What I see from Windows Explorer is not the same as when I browse with Console1.

In Windows Explorer I see for instance:
System on "mynetwareserver\Sys" (F:)
$HWNDS.BAK
$SVNDS.BAK
80800000
81800000.QDR
AIO
ATMUNI31
CONNECT
CSLIB
IPP
KKDE
nici
NLS
NMA
MNX
SCHEMA
SQLC
TSA
UTILS

Public on "mynetwareserver\Sys" (Z:)
DNSDHCP
jre
mgmt
NLS
SQLC
WIN32
WIN95
WINNT
and some pdf, exe, ovl, dll files. (161 files to be exact)

In the ConsoleOne browswer I see following
My World
-NDS
    -MyNetwareTree
    +Security
    -MinServer
    +Novell+NetWare 5 Conn SCL+510
    +Novell+NetWare 5 Server+510
    MinServer
    -MinServer_SYS
    +SomeProggyInstalled
    +CDROM$$.ROM
    +DELETED.SAV
    +ETC
    +ANTIVIRUS
    +java
    +javasave
    +LIB
    +LOGIN
    +MAIL
and some more directories, but no files.

browse your network -> hole network -> Netware services -> Novell Directory Services

rightclick your tree and click Authenticate
login as Admin
now dobbelclick you tree and you context
rightclick your NWSERVER_SYS and MAP NOVELL NETWORK DRIVE, this will be your SYS: path as you see from your Console1

What can I use the information I get from windows Explorer? Why do those two folders get maped automaticly when looging with the netware client?,

Those mappings are standard in netware.

You need to define no_default in your loginscript, preferable in the containerlogin script.

Are you completely Noob with Novell??

Yes I am, I appreciate your assistance Jensendk, in other words I do not need those mapped drives?
Do you leave them in your installations?

Hi Carnudo,

your problem is very simple:

You have 'mapped' the two drives F: & Z: to the following:

F:= mynetwareserver/sys:\system\
Z:= mynetwareserver/sys:\public\

As the above mappings are mapped as 'root-drives' you can not browse above the directory mapped.

WhatToDo:

Try the Netware map command:
  "MAP G:=mynetwareserver/sys:"'

or the equivelant MicroShot command:
  "NET USE G: \\mynetwareserver\sys"

replace 'mynetwareserver' with the actual servername.

This will map the G: to the root of the SYS: volume, and you will be able to see all the directories.

/fasfan

PS: In your description from ConsoleOne, you actually show that you are able to see the SYS:\etc directory. If you click on the '+' in front of 'etc' in the left windows-pane, you should see the files in the right windows-pane.

Enjoy you Netware-server

your Windows or Novell seems to map search drives for sys:\system and sys:public

you can add this line to your loginscript, it will map to sys:
MAP ROOT F:=SYS:

Fasfan, one of the dudes above I think it was Jensendk said that this could be done from the login script, I have browsed to the LOGIN directory in the sys volume but I dont see any file I could edit, there is one called LOGIN.EXE, but I dont think that is the one to edit, do you have any idea?, I would like very much to change this in the login script.

You have to open NWadmin -> sys:public\win32\nwadmn32.exe (Or similar)

Browse the tree to the container where your user is located, mark the container and take properties. Select login script, and start typing.

the sys:\login contains files for bindery login like NW3 did it.

Use sys:\public\win32\nwadmin32.exe to edit your loginscript

rightclick your tree and click the button loginscript
