DOS FTP Batch-files and error messages

I build dynamic ftp-srcipts and run them in a DOS-batch file. How can i locate error messages automatic i the batch if the ftp-command fails(connect,logon,transfer....) and test on the message code? If i can that i will automaticly build("echo") a script that will be sent to a folder and then will send mail(this script is ready).
