PC that still hangs

Hello!
I wrote about this and an other problem some time before. The other problem is solved but i still got this one.

The computer is a PC with Win 2000 Pro as OS.

Problem:
When I'm working with the computer like with Photoshop that are pretty demanding it uses to hang after a couple of minutes. But I can, through a twisted TP, exchange files with the computer but it doesn't responds to any input at all. I can't press CTRL+ALT+DELETE or move the mouse. Caps lock doesn't respond either. At hanging point I have had the taskmanager showing. At the processes tab the 3 processes at the top sorted at CPU is:
System Idle Process      CPU:92 Mem:16K
Photoshp.exe        CPU:06 Mem:31,4K
CSRSS.exe        CPU:02 Mem:1,4K

I have updated the BIOS to the latest version and run servicepack 4 without any improvement.

I have also defrag it many times.

To day a upgraded my Ram to 256 without any improvment.

So if any one got any idea what to do please let me know!!!

Is there any swap memory that I can increase and get the same result like buying more Ram?

Is there any log files that is created that perhaps can give a clue?

Does it exist any software that can monitor what happens perhaps?

Any suggestion at all is appricated!

Best regards
Fredrik

Could you tell us a bit more about the machine ?
Like what make and model is the motherboard ?
What kind of graphiccard is installed in the machine ?
What directx version is installed on the machine ?
Most of the info can be obtained by running this little program Everest Home:

Hello!

I give up, I really do give up.

I have done the following:

1 Installed ServicePack 4
2 Deframent the harddrive svereal times.
3 Disk Clean up.
4 I have Run Error Nuker, Ad aware and Spybot.
5 Run the computer with out anything with exccept motherboard, harddrive and graphicscard. But the computer still hangs with out any other hardware.
6 Updated all drivers.
7 Updated BIOS.
8 Run MBM5 and check that the fan is working and that the CPU doesn't gooes over 51 celcius.
9 Updated Photoshop.
10 Renamed the photoshop pref file
11 Changed the scratch disk for Photoshop
12 Updated Windows file with sfc /scannow
13 Run with 256 MB Ram borrowed from a friend.
14 Tried to generate the error in safe mode, but PS will not start with less then 256 colors.
15 Run Microsoft Memory Diagnostics (standard and extended test) without any reports of errors.
16 Reseted the bios.
17 Icreased the pageing from 250Mb to 500Mb and the registry from 40Mb to 45Mb.
18 Scaned the disks with chkdsk = 0 bad sectors
19 Scaned with Seagates scan tool and received Result: Failed with critical Errors so I called Seagate and the told me that this was a common message at old harddeives and nothing to worry about. Bad sectors would be something to worry about but that is not the case.
20 Switch the paging file for Windows to an other partition

To me it is so strange that everything works fine at my laptop with the same performance, ( with even more bad performance acctually), then at my other computer. It is so strnge.

But now I give up. But it would be so nice to understand.

Thanks for all your replies.

Please all of you give svar so I can reward you all.

Best regards
Fredrik

Hello!
I acctually think that I have solved my mystery with my hanging computer.

My network card was installed too close to my graphics card so my guess is that my graphicscard got overheated. This happend boot with Win 2000 and Mandrake 10.1, but not with Mandrake 8.1.

Now I have changed the positions and got more air in between the cards and the computer has run for 30 minutes now without any hanging.

What do you think? Could it be that easy?

Best regards
Fredrik

Actually yes. The error could very well be that the graphics system stop responding due to overheat, but the rest of the system keeps running, and that is why you still can transfer files to the machine.

Unfortunately we have no way to measure the GPU-temperature so it is impossible to tell if that really was the problem.

But to me it sounds like a possible cause :)
