Can't find the floppy disk?

Hello!

I would like to be able to read files from my floppy disk but my system doesn't seems to be able to find the floppy at start up.

If I start the "explorer" / home I can just see my harddrives and cd-readers but not the floppy.

Does any one know how to mount it at start up?

Best regards
Fredrik

Take a look /etc/fstab if you can se a line like "/dev/fd0 /xx/floppy " the "xx" is the mountpoint. Mount the floppy from shell, use the command
mount /dev/fd0 /mountpoint/floppy  -> Enter
or
rightclick on the desktop (KDE)-> new -> floppy unit

Hello!

Sorry, I have missed this totaly!

I tried:
rightclick on the desktop (KDE)-> new -> floppy unit

This gave me a floppy icon on the desktop.

But I can not click it and read a floppy? I just get a popup telling me:
Desktoppostfile
is of typ FSDevice but has not the post Dev=...

???

Do you got any clue?

Best regards

Hello!

Yes now I am able to se the images.

But my etc/fstab does not look like yours:

/dev/hda1 / ext3 defaults 1 1
/dev/hda6 /home ext3 defaults 1 2
//stationary/DOWNLOADS /mnt/DOWNLOADS smbfs username=% 0 0
//laptop/Laptop_share /mnt/Laptop_share smbfs credentials=/etc/samba/auth.laptop.administrator 0 0
//stationary/FREDRIKSHARE /mnt/SHARE smbfs user,username=% 0 0
/dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom auto umask=0,user,iocharset=iso8859-1,codepage=850,noauto,ro,exec,users 0 0
/dev/hdd /mnt/cdrom2 auto umask=0,user,iocharset=iso8859-1,codepage=850,noauto,ro,exec,users 0 0
none /proc proc defaults 0 0
none /tmp tmpfs defaults 0 0
/dev/hda5 swap swap defaults 0 0

I tried to write /dev/fd0 in the enhed-tab->dopdown-combox.

But still the same.

Do you think it is possible to edit the etc/fstab file?

Is it possible just to copy yours?
Best regards
Fredrik

Add this line to /etc/fstab
/dev/fd0  /mnt/floppy  auto  noauto,user  0 0

in terminal write
mkdir /mnt/floppy      -> click ok
chmod 777 /mnt/floppy  -> click ok
Then try again what I wrote 11/07-2005 21:50:58

Be sure your floppy is found, check with command
dmesg    -> click ok
if ok, a line contains fd0 will appear

Hello!

This is tricky!

I added the line you said and got an extra floppy icon on the desktop.
But I can not read any floppys from it.

I just get this error message, see next coomment since I can not write a "tilde"-sign from this linux.

How ever this is a clip from my output from dmesg:
0000:00:0a.0: 3Com PCI 3c905C Tornado at 0xd000. Vers LK1.1.19
inserting floppy driver for 2.6.8.1-12mdk
Floppy drive(s): fd0 is 1.44M
FDC 0 is a post-1991 82077
NET: Registered protocol family 17

Btw Is it common to do all this to use the floppy in Linux? It would be more easy if it worked from the begining.

Btw How do I remove the first floppy icon?

Best regards

Hello!

That was what I thought of to. But I just got:

Öppna
Lägg till i Kaffeine spellista
Montera
Egenskaper

I guess you are as surprised as me that I do not get delete as an option!

Same at the samba-mount-points

Now I may give up, I have several computers with Linux (SuSE and Red Hat) from KDE 3 and above I got a menu like http://www.helgec.dk/floppy_menu.jpg.
a possible solution for you could be to take contakt to http://www.linuxin.dk , most users in that forum are Mandrake users, if you got a solution I will be happy if you will inform me

I suppose you still have a folder in /mnt called floppy, if not then make one, delete the line you add to /etc/fstab 13/07-2005 11:45:26 (/dev/fd0  /mnt/floppy  auto  noauto,user  0 0)
add this line to /etc/fstab
/dev/fd0  /media/floppy  subfs  noauto,fs=floppyfss,procuid,nodev,nosuid,sync 0 0
remember to save
click with right mousebutton on your floppy ikon - select properties - use dropdown menu and select the line with fd0

ATTENTION  ATTENTION !!!!

add this line
/dev/fd0  /mnt/floppy  subfs  noauto,fs=floppyfss,procuid,nodev,nosuid,sync 0 0

Hello!
I removed all lines for mount-points that I did not wanted from fstab:
/dev/hda1 / ext3 defaults 1 1
/dev/hda6 /home ext3 defaults 1 2
//stationary/FREDRIKSHARE /mnt/SHARE smbfs user,username=% 0 0
/dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom auto umask=0,user,iocharset=iso8859-1,codepage=850,noauto,ro,exec,users 0 0
/dev/hdd /mnt/cdrom2 auto umask=0,user,iocharset=iso8859-1,codepage=850,noauto,ro,exec,users 0 0
none /proc proc defaults 0 0
none /tmp tmpfs defaults 0 0
/dev/hda5 swap swap defaults 0 0
/dev/fd0  /mnt/floppy  subfs  noauto,fs=floppyfss,procuid,nodev,nosuid,sync 0 0

That removed all crap on the desktop, feels much better. But I still have them i /mnt -folder even though I deleted them from that folder and restarted.

Now the problem looks that only root is able to mount the floppy. Is it possible to let the user "fredrik" be able to mount it?

Best regards

Make this command
ls -l /mnt/floppy  -> click OK

copy and paste the output in this thread, I am not back before 20:00

Hello!

Btw, thanks for all your help mate!

This is the output:
[root@Stationary fredrik]# ls -l /mnt/floppy
totalt 0
[root@Stationary fredrik]# ls -l /mnt/floppy

Seems like something missing to me? ;-)

Hello!
Interesting, so that is

Correct me if I am wrong but I guess that is the same as chmod 777 floppy?

How ever I logged in as root:
su
password
init 3
root
password
startx

I entered the mnt and set floppy to:
www.dsv.su.se/~fr-ander/root.png

I went back to ordinary user and this still looks like:
www.dsv.su.se/~fr-ander/fredrik.png

As you can see the settings doesn't follow to user "fredrik", and I get that error when I try to mount it.

I guess you also think this is strange?
