Problems with Vista and 56K modem

Hello mates!

My parents got a pretty new computer (Packard Bell, dual core 2Ghz, 2Gb Ram)
They use to connect to Internet with a 56k modem with an old computer.
The new computer doesn't got an serial interface.

I then bought a usb - serial cabel and thought that it must be easy to use the modem from the new computer. I bought the cabel from this swedish company:

Doesn't say so much but I think you get the picture.

I installed the driver for the USB-cabel (I did not think I needed to do that a t first).

How ever I got a connection through the modem, but It just lasted for 4 minutes.

I restarted the computer and then the modem did not want do start again. (You know that terrible sound)

I reinstalled and it worked for say 10 minutes so I restarted again, but again the modem did not start.

After a couple of reinstall and restart, I gave up.

I found this page:
http://www.modemsite.com/56k/trouble.asp

...but I can't see my problem, so now the question if any one know anything about this it would be great with some advice.

Best regards
Fredrik

(I do lean towards to get a adsl-modem or something instead but it would be nice to understand this and even nicer to solve it)

Try using another USB connection from the computer. There should be several to test.

It could be interference from another device using the same interrupt request.

Hello!

Thanks for your reply!

I actually tried that. The computer got 4 USB-ports.

But very interesting what you said about:
"It could be interference from another device using the same interrupt request. "

Could you tell me more about what you might suspect? Could it be some device inside the computer, and could I check what device uses what "interrupt request"?

Must admit I'm not sure what a "interrupt request" is.

Right now I just got a mouse, keyboard and tft-screen, but none of them use USB.

Best regards

It can also be other resources on the motherboard, and not necessarily plug in devices.

An interrupt request (IR) is a mean for peripherals (USB, Mouse, keyboard, hard disk, DVD, graphics card and such) to get the attention of the CPU with the intention of using CPU cycles for computing. Each interrupt request has an uniquely identifiable Value (number), and the CPU uses this value when freeing resources to the device sending the request.

If 2 devices have the same IR, and both are waiting for a response from the CPU, you will get in troubles.

I assume you have all updates and service packs from Windows Update.

If using another USB port doesn't solve your problem, you could try opening the control panel. Scroll to the bottom and open System. There you click on the device manager to open it. Scroll to the bottom, and there you will have your motherboard USB controllers.
Click on the + sign to expand, and from the bottom you right click on it and choose delete. From the bottom and up you do it to all entries under USB controllers. When done, shut down device manager, and reboot your system.
During the following start it will find and reinstall your USB controllers again.
It might do the trick.

Other vice I recommend you shift from 56k modem to a ADLS or Fibre Optical modem.

Hello!

Thanks for your reply!

This week I hopefully will get time to visit my parents.

But I got one question, when you say "delete" do you mean "uninstall" or "deactivate"? I ask this because these are the choices I found when I look at an other computer with "Vista Business". (My parents got Vista Home)

Best regards

Fredrik
