It is not necessesary to format your (virtual) harddrive. When you start the VMWare virtual machine, the program will itself ask you want kind of operating systems you will install. When you reached to the installation of Winnt, there you can choose you file system and VMware will "adjust" to your settings.

And to your question, the only thing you have to do if you want to install an operating system, is to tell VMWare what kind of operating system, you will install and how big a size o a virtual harddrive you will make. Whether it is Linux, Dos, Mac or Windows. So if your installation CD is bootable, they you don´t have to worry about how the program "works", but choose you settings and the program will take care of the rest.

Be aware that installing an operating system, might require some special settings. This is written in documents that can be found at www.vmware.com.
