How to Un tar

Hi
I have a Intel bonáza motherboard with a intergrated NIC.
Because it is fairly new i need to instal a dvr for the NIC.
This driver i have downloaded from Intel and it is called-
rhpl-0.93.4-1.i386.rpm.
the instructions say that i have to unzip/untar this. I have tried changing the name but I do not seem to make it work, and for those who wonder Yes I am new to this Linux game.

did you try just installing it by issuing the "rpm -ivh package_name.rpm" command?

You could also just try installing.
If it does not work, all it will make is an error saying that the package can not be installed.

Ok things have happend with the rpm. it look's like most of it went in but there were some messages about not compatible. it would appear that intel instructions were ment for a tar ball and not for the rpm thanks for your help

what has happened now?
normally a .rpm file is a precompiled package, not something you should untar or unpack.

when you say that you have untared, was it then the .rpm file?
to me it seems higly unlikely that they would tar files and call them .rpm.

I searched for the package on google and found this page:
http://rpm.pbone.net/index.php3/idpl/642537/stat/4/com/rhpl-0.93.4-1.i386.rpm.html

Where did you download the package, and what happends when you untar'ed it? (Directory structure etc.)

Sorry I am confusing the situation. file rhpl-0.93.4-1.i386.rpm.was the file I tried to untar. However during my efforts i realised that this was the wrong file. I shouls have been working on a tarbal. This i have been playing with all day. I believe that I have arrived at some kind of understanding of untaring and continuing the proces until one arrives at the goal.
Of installing the thing/things. Sry for the trouble i am a old windows man. so i think thatwe can say that the problem is solved until the next one. thank you all for your help
