MaxTweaks does several things, all of which are registry changes only. Here are the things it updates, fixes, secures, or tweaks for performance:
It modifies the user's wait time for window pop-ups from 250 ms to 150 ms. I tried 0 ms...but it actually actually makes the pop-up speed annoying.
It enables "Auto End Tasks" for the user....tasks that don't exit properly.
It sets Windows to automatically unload DLLs....freeing memory for other functions.
It sets the Windows kernel to non-paged....so it stays in memory. (Note: Disable this if you have less than 128 MB...but you shouldn't be running 2000 or XP if this is true).
It boosts the default IO buffer from 512 Kilobytes to 16 Megabytes.
It forces the system to use the standard percentage of RAM for a disk cache. If you choose to override (great for a server), then all but 4MB becomes system cache.
It sets the real time clock (IRQ8) system priority to high....really smoothes out the system.
It turns on unused PnP devices in the "Display Hidden Devices" setting in Hardware Manager so you can remove those pesky unused PnP devices finally (already available in XP).
Disables the Automatic file sharing for system hidden shares (e.g. C$) so you are not making connections available to the world. Note...in XP the default is Guest access enabled (even with your guest account disabled)! This feature is known as "Simple File Sharing" in the Folder Options.
Optionally, you can modify to Hide your NetBIOS PC from the Browse Master list! It is still visible by default...for those of you with multiple home PCs.
Removes the check for a remote computer's scheduled jobs before attempting to access network shares.
Tunes the TCP protocol parameters to match most cablemodem and true ADSL (non-PPPoE) network caps and latency.
Zeros out the Windows Media Unique ID for the current user profile and the .Default profile so it cannot be used as a SuperCookie for unscrupulous web tracking and violation of privacies. (See SuperCookies section below for testing).
Enables TCP SynCookie Denial of Service (DoS) protection.
Reduces TCP keepalive time to reduce threat of IP session hijacking.
Disables Dead Gateway Detection (IP level security).
Disables bad/incomplete/failed Domain Name Service (DNS) lookups from being cached by the DNS [caching] client.
Disables NTFS last access updates to your NTFS filesystem (big disk I/O performance help).
REMOVED/Default Restored - Sets the default contiguous file allocation size up from 512KB default to 2 Megabytes.
Sets W32Time Service (NTP network Time) to sync clock with atomic clock services once every 8 hours as opposed to once every 7 days.
NEW - Disables Distributed COM Services (a.k.a. DCOM ***IMPORTANT***, you must be at SP3 or higher on Win2K).
