Change from Mandrake to Fedora?

Hello!

I would like some advise before I go ahead.

Right now I have a computer with Mandrake 10.1 but every time I try to install anything from a rpm I get message that I need some other strange package. Last was some liba52 so I could install Kino. But when I tried to install liba52 I needed something else. I'm getting pretty tired of this.

I got some advise that I should change to Fedora instead, since Feodore take care of all dependensis.

So before I go ahead do you guys think this is a good idea?

Best regards
Fredrik

Well......
It seems you never bothered to read the manual and get to grips with package management. It is not too late however: http://www.speculation.org/~garrick/urpmifaq.txt

If you change to Fedora and try to get by with just the rpm command you will see the same story.

Hello!

This is the comment I was looking for!

So you think that it is not more difficult with Mandrake then with Fedora?

I do have to admit that I did not read the manual so I wil start right away.

Perhaps you got some other useful links for me?

Best regards
Fredrik

Do not forget to give a "svar" so I can rewadr you!

Well in general all the text files in garricks library are useful:
http://www.speculation.org/~garrick/

You may wanna read the rpm faq as well as the new mandrake user faq.

Mandrake is almost as easy as it comes, so there is no need to change. Sure, Mandrake does have some shortcomings, but I don't think you have hit any of them yet as "user friendly" is not one of them.

Hello!

But what do you think of this message when I tried to install lba52 with urpmi:

[root@Stationary Liba52]# urpmi liba52dec0-devel-0.7.4-6mdk.i586.rpm
Vissa begärda paket kan inte installeras:
liba52dec0-devel-0.7.4-6mdk.i586 (på grund av otillräckliga liba52dec0[== 0.7.4-6mdk])
Fortsätt? (J/n)

It is the same message as when I just doubleclicked the rpm.

If you think swedish is difficult to understand I try to translate it into english:
Some package can not be installed because unsufficent liba52dec0?????

Best regards
Fredrik

I understand Swedish. I live in Sweden. =))

You are trying to install a development package. What does just "urpmi liba52dec" give you?

Either way, if it keeps causing you grief, just get the package from here:
http://rpmfind.net//linux/RPM/mandrake/10.2/i586/media/main/liba52dec0-0.7.4-6mdk.i586.html

and rpm -if liba52dec0-0.7.4-6mdk.i586.rpm
as root.

Hello!

I get this doning this:
[root@Stationary Liba52]# urpmi liba52dec
inget paket med namn liba52dec
[root@Stationary Liba52]#

And this doing this:
[root@Stationary Liba52]# rpm -if liba52dec0-devel-0.7.4-6mdk.i586.rpm
fel: Ouppfyllda beroenden:
        liba52dec0 = 0.7.4-6mdk behövs av liba52dec0-devel-0.7.4-6mdk
[root@Stationary Liba52]#

It looks like I get the same error with booth rpm and urpmi?

Btw
Funny to hear that you live in sweden! Are you danish from beginning or do you just think that eksperten.dk is one of the best sites there is like me? ;-)

weird.. the codec requires the development files. Probably there is a good reason, but I dont see what it is.

Anyway, you have the rpm file liba52dec0-devel-0.7.4-6mdk.i586.rpm ???

Then
rpm -Uvhf liba52dec0-devel-0.7.4-6mdk.i586.rpm executed in the folder that the .rpm file is in. Remember to be root.

The 'f' is for force. So it should bypass all complaints and objections that rpm might have.

I am danish, but I work for HP support in Ljusdal (*blush*)

Hello!

I downloaded the file you refered to and installed that with:
[root@Stationary Liba52]# rpm -if liba52dec0-0.7.4-6mdk.i586.rpm
[root@Stationary Liba52]#

It looks like it is installed?

As you said I got some development file at first I guess.

I will read the doc you refered to.

Thanks for your help!

Btw, Do you use Mandrake yourself?

Get SuSE 9.3 here ftp://klid.dk/suse/i386/9.3/iso/ and you will discover install-problems belongs to the past

Nope, I dont use Mandrake, but I did way back when.
Yes, no error means it installed, so that's good.

And while I usually agree with helgec I disagree this time. We all have a pet distro, but I stopped doing senseless promotion long ago.
This all boils down to what you really know how to use and what you're comfortable with. First time Suse users most likely also experience problems from time to time.
These "install distro X and all your problems will be gone" postings frequently pop up on help forums. They dont help.....

Ok!

Perhaps I could ask you one more question in this thread.

I installed liba52dec beacuse that package is required to install Kino.

When that package was installed I tried with Kino again and now I also need an package called:
libraw1394.so.8

But when I try to find that packge I only find "src" like:
libraw1394-1.1.0-3mdk.src.rpm

Correct me if I'm wrong but I guess I need to compile that in some way?

Perhaps you can give me some hints about that as well.

Best regards

just a thought.. in theory just "urpmi kino" should do all the work for you. Did you try?

Anyway, libraw binary for firewire interface is here: http://www.rpmfind.net/linux/RPM/mandrake/10.2/i586/media/main/libraw1394_8-1.1.0-3mdk.i586.html

rpmfind.net is a good source in general.

Hello!

I found the file you refered to and it get instaleld with out any problems.

But further on I needed more:
[root@Stationary mjpegtools]# rpm -if ffmpeg-0.4.8-9mdk.i586.rpm
fel: Ouppfyllda beroenden:
        libavcodec.so.0 behövs av ffmpeg-0.4.8-9mdk
        libavformat.so.0 behövs av ffmpeg-0.4.8-9mdk

It looks like it is difficult to find:
libavcodec
libavformat

I found
http://rpm.pbone.net/index.php3/stat/4/idpl/2056585/com/ffmpeg-0.4.9-0.lvn.0.16.20050427.3.x86_64.rpm.html

That is saying that those packges is included some how.
But this ffmpeg is for Fedora.

I tried to find the packages at rpmfind.net and rpmseek.com but it looks difficult to find them in rpm.
