Can this be done - "push" to logged on user on an intranet?

Hi there,

I have a semi-advanced question that I've been pondering about for some
time. I'm a quite advanced user of ASP & SQL, and I know quite alot of
people dealing in this but nobody seems to have a solution for my
problem. But who better to ask than you guys? =)

Ok, first off - personally I don't think that this can be done in any
easy fashion (or without using Java) but here goes:

1) The functionality I'm searching for is best compared to a chat.
2) The problem with ASP chats are that they all rely on reloading the
page within a set number of seconds, which as we all know is no good
since you get to many request to the server. For example; 6 reloads/min
+ 30 users =  180 request/min * 8 hours = 86400 requests...

3) Ok, so it's not a chat that I'm after, I'm building an intranet
solution where the need to "broadcast" messages to the logged on users
have arisen, for example (semi important example but whatever) CEO
wishes to call for a meeting and has to relay this to all of the users
logged on to the intranet.

4) One way to solve this would be to have a hidden frame that reloads
every 15 seconds or so to check for new messages, considering point 2 I
don't see this as a solution. Instead I have the need to perform
somekind of "push" to every (or a single) person logged on to the
intranet. I wish to accomplish this by running some kind of application
(preferably VB) on the webserver.

Hope I was clear on everything - and MANY thanks in advance to whoever
can help me with this one =)

Peace,
Gemini

You may see a way of "pushing" on

...but perhaps not applicable to you....

Great chat! But I'm not really clear on how you accomplish the "push".
Seems like you have a hidden frame/document that checks for updates? Is that right? Ultra smooth anyways =)

No updates. The server simply does not close the connection, but
keeps pumping HTML (or invisible spaces...) out to the client.

They tell me it's tough on memory comsumption (RAM) on the
server.

!!!!!??!?!? Cool! Now were closing in =)
Did u accomplish this through Javascript (which in IE 5.5+ can establish connections to the server) or did you somehow do this server side?

Peace,

Only on ther server side - but in PHP on a Unix-like box.
Dunno 'bout ASP and Windows. Unfortunately the exact
code is proprietary - but is has been greatly inspired by
some public chat.
