LEGO Company History

1932
Ole Kirk Christiansen, master carpenter and joiner, establishes his business in the village of Billund, Denmark.
His firm manufactures stepladders, ironing boards - and wooden toys. His son, Godtfred Kirk Christiansen starts working in the business at the age of 12.
1934
The company and its products now adopt the name LEGO, formed from the Danish words "LEg GOdt" ("play well"). Later, it is realised that in Latin the word means "I study" or "I put together".
The firm has 6-7 employees. A year or two later, Ole Kirk's places the following motto on the workshop wall: "Only the best is good enough".

1942
The LEGO factory burns to the ground - but production of wooden toys is quickly resumed.

1947
The LEGO company is the first in Denmark to buy a plastic injection-moulding machine for making toys.

1949
The company produces about 200 different plastic and wooden toys, including Automatic Binding Bricks, a forerunner of the LEGO bricks we know today. They are sold only in Denmark.

1950
Godtfred Kirk Christiansen - son of the founder, Ole Kirk Christiansen - is appointed Junior Vice President.

1951
Plastic toys now account for half the company's output.

1953
The bricks get a new name: "LEGO Mursten" ("LEGO Bricks").

1954
The word LEGO is officially registered in Denmark on 1st May.

1955
After further developing the LEGO Bricks, the company launches the revolutionary "LEGO System of Play": 28 sets and 8 vehicles. It also sells supplementary elements.

1956
The first foreign sales company is established in Hohenwestedt, Germany.

1957
Godtfred Kirk Christiansen is appointed Managing Director. There is a very active programme of product development.

1958
The current LEGO stud-and-tube coupling system is patented. The new coupling principle makes models
much more stable. The possible combinations of bricks run into astronomical figures.
Sloping (roof tile) bricks are launched.
Ole Kirk Christiansen dies and Godtfred Kirk Christiansen becomes head of the company.

1959
Futura, the product-development, now has five members of staff

1960
The wooden toy warehouse is destroyed by fire. Production of wooden toys is discontinued and a decision is made to concentrate exclusively on plastics
1961
The LEGO Group invents the wheel! It is marketed in the following year.
The range comprises 50 sets, 15 vehicles and various loose elements

1963
Cellulose acetate, hitherto the most important raw material in LEGO production, is replaced by ABS (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene). The new material results in bricks which are more stable and have better colour quality.

1964
Model sets, complete with building instructions, are launched as a natural addition to existing Basic and Supplementary sets. supplementary sets.

1966
The first LEGO train arrives. Complete with rails and much more. The 4.5-volt motor is launched at the same time.
The product range comprises 57 sets and 25 vehicles. A total of 706 million LEGO elements are produced during the year.

1967
The DUPLO® brick is invented and a patent is applied for. (The brand name is changed to LEGO DUPLO bricks in 1997).
There are now 218 different LEGO elements(not counting colour variations) and between 18 and 19 million LEGO sets are sold during the year.

1968
LEGOLAND® Billund opens its gates on 7th June - attracting 625,000 visitors in its first season.

1969
The DUPLO series for under-fives is launched internationally.
The 12-volt motor joins the Train series.
1970
Brightly colored cogwheels are launched in various sizes. Later, they are a major source of inspiration for the LEGO TECHNIC program introduced in 1977.
1973
The first LEGO ships are launched-and the LEGO Company introduces doll's house units, together with furniture components.
A single new LEGO logo replaces the various logos that have been used until now. The new LEGO logo unifies all the company's products under one banner.

1974
LEGO figures representing a new concept, the LEGO family, enter the market. The set becomes the biggest-selling product to date in our range, equally popular with boys and girls.

1975
The "Expert Series" for building models such as veteran cars is launched.

1977
The LEGO TECHNIC range is marketed. These are advanced, complex models for the older children to build. They are "as technical as the real thing".
New DUPLO sets are launched, including door and window elements and new "symbol" figures without arms or legs.
Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen - the third generation - joins the LEGO Group's management.

1978
LEGOLAND mini figures with movable arms and legs come on the market. So do base plates with road markings. Children can now create entire towns.

1979
LEGOLAND Space is launched. It quickly becomes a global success.
Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen is appointed President and Chief Executive Officer of INTERLEGO A/S (renamed LEGO A/S in January 1987).
1980
New additions to the DUPLO programme: pull-along and rocking toys for toddlers. And the DUPLO rabbit logo is introduced. The Educational Products Department - LEGO Dacta since 1989 - is established
1982
DUPLO Mosaic and "Technic I" are introduced. They are the first examples of special product development for the pre-school and schools market.

1983
Introduction of the DUPLO Baby series, which includes six rattles. There are also new, large figures with movable arms and legs in the bigger DUPLO sets.

1984
A new Castle series is introduced with knights, horses and many other new elements.

1985
The LEGO Prize is founded in April. It is an international annual award of DKK 750,000 (increased in 1989 to DKK 1,000,000) for exceptional efforts on behalf of children LEGO Technic Control (a school product) has its world premiere at the Didacta Fair in Stuttgart, Germany.

1986
The big news of the year is Technic Computer Control. On 16th April (the Birthday of H.M. Queen Margrethe of Denmark) the LEGO Group is granted the title "Purveyor to Her Majesty the Queen".

1987
Buckets containing DUPLO or LEGO Basic components can now be bought in the USA and some European countries.

1988
The big news in the DUPLO range is a travelling circus. Forest people" come to the market in the Castle series - and the "Black Star" control centre reports for action in Space. The first official LEGO World Cup building championships are held in Billund in August.

1989
The Pirate line is launched with an enormous success-in the first year we experience record-breaking sales figures. At the beginning of the year, the old Educational Products Department changes its name to LEGO Dacta. The word "dacta" derives from the Greek word "didactic", meaning "the study of the purpose, means and substance of learning and the learning process".
1990
The LEGO Model Team series is launched.
The latest DUPLO product is a zoo with giraffes, crocodilles, bears and other animals.
In the LEGO TECHNIC product programme, the year's new product is the Control Centre.

The LEGO Group is now one of the world's 10 largest toy manufacturers - the only one in Europe (the others are American and Japanese).
The magic barrier - one million visitors in a single year - is broken for the first time at LEGOLAND Billund on 4th September.
Godtfred Kirk Kristiansen, son of the company's founder, celebrates his 70th birthday on 6th July.

1991
Large elements with human and animal heads are introduced in some of the DUPLO sets.
There are five new Harbour sets, containing ships with many different functions. Three seaworthy vessels are also launched: a fire ship, a police boat and a yacht.
The 4.5V and 12V train series are replaced by a 9V system with a control panel which makes the trains go backwards as well as forwards.

1992
Young craftsmen between three and six years of age can now try out their skills with the Toolo line, which has been added to the DUPLO product programme. Models drawn from everyday life can be built with the help of a Toolo screwdriver.
The most noteworthy new product in LEGO Town is the Paradisa theme, designed to appeal to girls aged six or seven.A Guinness record in railway line construction is set - 545 metres of LEGO rails with three model locomotives.
The world's largest LEGO Castle is built on Swedish television. Over 400,000 LEGO bricks are transformed into a castle 4.45 m x 5.22 m castle - measured for the Guinness Book of Records.
The Second LEGO World Cup Final is held in Billund in August with 32 children participating from 11 countries.

1993
The new DUPLO Train range is the big product news of the year. There are both push-along trains and one powered by three 1.5V batteries.
The LEGO SYSTEM Basic series now includes a "Brickvac" - a "vacuum cleaner" that looks like a parrot. It is used to pick up elements after play sessions.
In LEGO Castle, the Dragon Knight's Castle gets a dragon's cave, complete with fire breathing dragon and a wizard.

1994
The big new DUPLO product this year is a playhouse in new pastel colours.
The Belville line is launched in the LEGO SYSTEM product program. A new and different concept designed for girls of 5 years and upwards.
"Islanders" with masks and colourful body paint are added to the Pirate line.
Experienced LEGO TECHNIC builders can now enjoy constructing the Super Car, which has more than 1,300 elements.
In beautiful spring weather on 6th April, a ceremony at Windsor, west of London, marks the construction start for the company's new LEGOLAND Family Park.

1995
Launch of LEGO DUPLO PRIMO (DUPLO BABY in North America) under-twos.
FreeStyle, a relaunch of the LEGO Basic programme, joins the LEGO SYSTEM product range.
LEGO SYSTEM Aquazone, an exciting underwater world, complete with crystal formations and octopuses, is introduced for slightly older children.
The biggest news of the year in the LEGO TECHNIC programme is LEGO TECHNIC Control II with models operated by computerized control unit.
Godtfred Kirk Christiansen, son of the company's founder, dies on 13th July.

1996
The LEGO Group enters the Internet, with www.lego.com
LEGOLAND Windsor, the first LEGO family park outside Denmark, opens on March 29. It has an area of 120,000 m2.
In March a new development department is established: SPU Darwin. Its work includes the development of software based on and related to LEGO products.
LEGOLAND Billund welcomes its 25 millionth visitor since its opening on 18th April 1968.
The new LEGO Truck Show takes to the road.
The exciting LEGO TIME SYSTEM is added to the growing range of licensed products.

1997
The names PRIMO and DUPLO are changed to LEGO PRIMO and LEGO DUPLO on 1st January.
LEGO SCALA is the LEGO Group's latest product for girls.
In LEGO SYSTEM, the biggest new product is the Diver theme.
For the first time in LEGO history, a CD-ROM containing building instructions is included with a model set. The set also contains a Bar Code Truck with a programmable bar-code reader.
The first real LEGO computer game, "LEGO Island", is launched in September..
A 700 m2 LEGO Imagination Center is opened on 13th October in Disney Village, Florida.
The first LEGO MINDSTORMS Learning Center opens at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago, USA, in November.

1998
LEGO MINDSTORMS and LEGO CyberMaster are launched in LONDON, England, at a major media event in January.
The LEGO PRIMO range gets eight new sets to develop and stimulate infants' senses and motor abilities.
There are also exciting new products in the LEGO SYSTEM range. The Res-Q sets contain the elements for a large rescue station with all kinds of equipment.
The ZNAP line also sees the light of day.
In April the new LEGO logo is presented. It is a graphically "tightened" version of the logo used for the past 25 years.
In May there is an urgent recall of the LEGO PRIMO Ladybird rattle from end-consumers and retailers after it is discovered that there is a risk of it lodging in small children's throats.
LEGO Media International begins collaboration with the Danish Egmont Group on the publication of children's books.
In September, the LEGO Group initiates "Next Generation Forum".
The slogan "Just Imagine..." is introduced into the LEGO universe in the autumn.
At the end-1998, LEGO Media International launches its first three self-developed interactive software products on CD-ROM:LEGO Creator, LEGO Chess and LEGO Loco.

1999
The third LEGOLAND park opens in Carlsbad, southern California, in March.
The big product news of the year is the launch of the LEGO Star Wars range, which quickly becomes the highest-selling new product line ever. Winnie the Pooh and Friends are launched in the LEGO DUPLO series.
This is also the year in which the LEGO Company undergoes restructuring. The changes result in the loss of 1,000 jobs. The result is a new simplified organisation equipped to meet the worldwide challenges of the new millenium.
Mitchel Resnick of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology(MIT) is named as the new LEGO Papert Professor of Learning Research.
There is a major co-promotion with McDonald's in October.
Fortune Magazine names the LEGO brick as one of its "Products of the Century".
2000
The British Association of Toy Retailers names the LEGO brick "Toy of the Century".

The LEGO Company achieved its budgeted surplus of DKK 500 million and employees are rewarded with a bonus and a global party. The company mission and fundamental beliefs are being revised to "Children are our role models...".
LEGO Company participates in the EXPO 2000 exhibition in Hannover, Germany. The LEGO Company has put together a "Man at play" exhibition in the Danish pavilion, in which the main attraction is a mass of LEGO MINDSTORMS robots.

In November the LEGO & Steven Spielberg MovieMaker Set is launched.

Other important product launches during the year includes The Musical Apple for the youngest children. LEGO MyBot for the 4 year olds and the LEGO Football (LEGO Soccer in the US), all three products harvest international prizes.

In the girls line, LEGO Scala, a new material is introduced, the decoration foam that allows you to create soft accessories. LEGO Technic introduces two interesting car products, the grand Silver Champion and Speed Slammers that adds a new powerful effect to the assortment.

2001
"Financially, the past year was extremely disappointing," says Poul Plougmann, Executive Vice President and COO of the LEGO Company in March 2001. "The LEGO Company runs a deficit of about DKK 1 billion in year 2000. But we know what went wrong and we know what to do about it. We will refocus on our core business, which is materials for open-ended play for children," he continues.

In 2001 LEGO Company decides to make its business processes more flexible. This combined with the introduction of a new ERP system, SAP R/3 version 4.6, is called the LEGO Light project and involves the entire organization.

On the product side there are several exciting new features:
The launch of Bionicle from LEGO TECHNIC has been a great success! This is the first time that LEGO Company is marketing a story-driven universe. Two software titles also stands out -- the LEGO Island and LEGO My World. The later receives an important award in Germany for the best software learning product at the world's largest book fair in Frankfurt. Other new launches include the DUPLO dolls and two license products, the LEGO Bob the Builder and the LEGO Harry Potter line. Jack Stone is another new member of the LEGO family. He is the hero who is always on hand to save people in danger. Jack Stone models are ideal for children from the age of four years. A new generation of the LEGO MINDSTORMS model is also brought to light Robotic Invention System 1,5.
In autumn Executive Discovery unveils the first-ever LEGO product specifically for adults -- a tool that helps business managers develop strategy by using the creative dynamics of the LEGO Brick and play. The concept is called LEGO Serious Play
