How to load nvidia driver at startup

Hello!

Finally I have manage to install and run the nvidia driver for my Mandrake 10.1.

But every time i start the computer I need to:
modprobe nvidia
...to load the driver.

I have edited booth XF86Config and xorg.conf for nvida use but the computer does not start with the driver loaded at start up.

So if any one could tell me what to do or configure it would be great. I'm not so good at linux so please explain it like I'm 6 years old ;-) Ok 18 years old perhaps is better! :-)

Best regards
Fredrik

XF86Config and xorg.conf are you running two x-servers?

In your /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.6 (or kernel-2.4 if you are running an older kernel) you have to write modules you want to be loaded at boot.

(I dunno why you are writing in english on a danish forum).

Here is mine file:
# /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.6:  kernel modules to load when system boots.
# $Header: /home/cvsroot/gentoo-src/rc-scripts/etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.$
#
# Note that this file is for 2.6 kernels.
#
# Add the names of modules that you'd like to load when the system
# starts into this file, one per line.  Comments begin with # and
# are ignored.  Read man modules.autoload for additional details.

# For example:
# 3c59x
nvidia

Hello!

Thanks for your fast reply.

Strangely it looks like I do not have any folder in /etc named modules.autoload.d or any where actually.

The kernel version is 2.6.8.1-12mdk

I write in english just because I suck at danish, I'm from sweden. Must say that eksperten.dk is the best expert site!

So I hope it is ok to write in english.

Best regards

My solution was for a Gentoo system. I thougt it were the same for Mandrake.
Try searching for a file called modules in your /etc/ maybe it is:
/etc/modules.conf
/etc/modules

Here it is:
Put "alias char-major-195 nvidia" in your /etc/modules.conf and run "depmod -a".

Hello!

I found a file /etc/modules.conf and add "nvidia" at last row. But nothing happend. Should it be "modprobe nvidia"?

Aha oh so you have add a new comment.

Hmm...
Should I write "alias char-major-195 nvidia" at the last row and open a console as root and just write "depmod -a" and push enter. or do I have to be standing in /etc?

Best regards

Just write depmod -a anywhere you like, just be root.
Then reboot and see what is going to happen.

Hello!
(My Internet has been down)

I tried what you said but I still just start in konsole mode.

My /etc/modules file looks like:

[root@Stationary etc]# more modules
# /etc/modules: kernel modules to load at boot time.
#
# This file should contain the names of kernel modules that are
# to be loaded at boot time, one per line.  Comments begin with
# a `#', and everything on the line after them are ignored.
alias char-major-195 nvidia

[root@Stationary etc]#

When this file was saved I run "depmod -a", I guess that was what you ment?

So if you got any ideas please let me know
Best regards
Fredrik
