How to play wmv-files with Kaffeine?

Hello!

I use Mandrake 10.1, Kaffeine is included in that distru.

But I can not play any wmv-files. I can just hear the sound but no movie, just a black screen.

I have done this:

1) download the win32 package
2) extact it
3) put it in /usr/lib/win32.

I would like to be able Kaffeine and not need to install MPlayer since Kaffeine is installed already and it looks like it should work in some way.

So if you got any ideas please let me know!

Best regards
Fredrik

You don't need to install MPlayer. Just the download the codec package from here:
http://www1.mplayerhq.hu/homepage/design7/codecs.html

direct link:
http://www1.mplayerhq.hu/MPlayer/releases/codecs/windows-essential-20050115.zip

And follow the instructions. I think is should be enough to do, what you have have posted here..

Good Luck :)

Hello Zyphon!

Thanks for your reply!

I have extracted all the files in the downloaded package in these 3 folders:
/usr/local/lib/codecs/
/usr/local/lib/win32
/usr/lib/win32

When I start Kaffeine and play a wmv-file, all I get is the sound. No video.

Do you think I need to do something more? In the README-file they say something about:
"you are compiling from source, but you can change that value by passing the
'--with-codecsdir' option to './configure'."

To me this sounds like I need to find the source code of Kaffeine, start a console and step to some folder and type something, I do not know?

So if you can help me out it would be great!

The full README looks like:

These are binary codecs for use with MPlayer. They are useless for normal
Windows players (like WMP, QuickTime, RealPlayer, ...) as they only contain
the DLLs without installer and other fancy stuff needed to use them with
common Windows players.

Put the files contained in this archive in a directory where MPlayer will find
them. The default directory is /usr/local/lib/codecs/ ($prefix/lib/codecs/) if
you are compiling from source, but you can change that value by passing the
'--with-codecsdir' option to './configure'.

If you use a prebuilt MPlayer package it will most likely be /usr/lib/codecs,
see the documentation of your package for details.

In the past /usr/local/lib/win32 or /usr/lib/win32 was the default directory,
some packages as well as a few other Unix players like xine and avifile still
use it, refer to their documentation for further detail

Best regards
Fredrik

Well i actually don't know. Allthough the files have to be copied to /usr/lib/win32 according to
http://kaffeine.sourceforge.net/help.php

There might be an option in kaffeine you can set, some sort of video. I know there is several output options in MPlayer, and that might also be the case with kaffeine.
