Hello ladies and gentlemen
First of all, I will thank you all for showing up tonight.
My name is Chris Gregersen, and I am a student from Denmark, and I am currently studying at the International Business College in Kolding and I was asked to speak to you about innovation and Denmark.
I’ll developing three main points.
In the first part I’ll speak about innovative companies in Denmark. Secondly I’ll speak about why innovation is so important for Denmark, and finally I’ll speak about how we can keep the innovation, and the innovative companies in Denmark, and what we do to be innovative.
In Denmark we have several innovative and big companies. Here I am talking about companies like Novo Nordisk which is one of the biggest – if not the biggest – company who produce medicine for people with diabetes. This company got to be innovative, to keep the position as one of the biggest companies. If they aren’t innovative they can not invent new medicine and they cannot defend their leading position at the market.
Another very innovative Danish company is the company called “Skype”. The founder of Skype was Janus Friis and Niklas Zennström in 2003.  Skype created a little piece of software that makes communicating with people around the world easy and fun. With Skype you can say hello or share a laugh with anyone, anywhere. Even though you can’t call Skype a Danish company anymore since it was sold to Microsoft some years ago but it is a good company to show that Denmark are innovative in technology also.
Let’s move on to the next point which was “Why innovation is so important for Denmark”
Denmark is one of the smallest countries in the world if we compare the citizens and km2. This does also mean that Denmark does not have a lot of citizens and we are relative few people to run our country. If Denmark wants to trade with other countries we have to get some new and interesting products the other countries find interesting. Since Denmark’s export is mostly meat from pigs and things you find on a farm, it is very important that the Danish farmers know how to produce and farm as much as possible. This shows that Denmark needs to be innovative in producing machines for the Danish people.
When we talk about machines a good example is Vestas who produces windmills. Vestas is the biggest windmill producer in the world due to the fact that they know how to make a windmill more effective than their competitors.
It is very important to have the innovation so the Danish companies are getting bigger and Denmark will be an interesting country to trade with.
We are now at tonight’s last point, which is what Denmark should do to keep innovation in Denmark, and what we do to be innovative.
The Danish government is giving prizes to the most innovative companies every year and they are supporting the new companies with money for their investigation in new products. It is an honour to be the most innovative company in a country which is also why a lot of companies are heading for this title.
A lot of the companies in Denmark are outsourcing their production to the middle-east but since it got more expensive to produce in the middle-east due to the oil prices many companies are staying in Denmark. When they produce here, it is like a guaranty for quality and that is what our business partners want.
Denmark is a country who does a lot out of innovation. In school we have lesions called innovation where we work with new product and our own business, and learn how to generate new ideas.
