Choosing the Appropriate Defragmentation Method
When using O&O Defrag 2000, you can choose between three different defragmentation methods: SPACE, COMPLETE/Name and COMPLETE/Date. Each method is explained in detail in the following sections. There you will find a description of how they increase the performance of your system, how long the defragmentation process takes, and notes about future defragmentation runs.
Free space is a very important requirement for O&O Defrag 2000 Professional Edition to run successfully. The less free space is available, the longer the defragmentation process will take. This applies for all three methods. We recommend that at least 10% of the total capacity should be free to achieve best results. The recommended figure depends on your system configuration and the number of files stored on the volume. For NTFS volumes, please check the Volume Information dialog for the value "Free w/o reserved MFT". This shows you the amount of available free space for user applications. Only Windows can write into the MFT and the free space that is reserved for the MFT. This is the reason why the Windows Explorer shows a larger amount of free space for NTFS volumes than is actually available for user applications such as a defragmentation tool.
