Permissions

Jeg har en database LALA.MDB. Jeg har hidtil kunne åbne den uden problemer.

For nylig gav jeg i access en kollega adgang til databasen (Access + fil adgang), men når hun åbner den kommer der en fejlmeddelse :

You do not have the necessary permissions to use the 'S:\00000 RA\BUDGET\LALA.MDB' object. Have your system administrator or the person who created this object establish the appropriate permissions for you.

If I understand you correctly this has NOTHING to do with Access's buildt in security but NT permissions  etc.

Am I righ tin saying that the dB is on a network drive and the access rights too this drive are through NT security?

If this is correct then you should be able to copy the dB to a local drive (C:) and open it there, have you tried this?

Var det kun dig som brugte databasen indtil nu?
Har I prøvet at åbne den på sammetid?
Du har ikke opdelt databasen, opdel databasen så kan flere brugere åbne den!

I just tried to copy the db to local drive (C:), but the same error occured.
You are right in, that the access is through NT security, but I can open eg. a text-file with exactly same permissions from the same directory.

It looks like the error occurs "between NT permisions and opening the Access database".

We have for fun tried to remove all permissions from a specific user (therefore, no NT permissions to that user to open the file). That results in another error (saying, that the user have no right to open that file), that the one described above.

Det har ikke noget med en / fler-brugere at gøre. Vi kan slet ikke åbne databasen.

What about LINKED tables? If there are linked tables then you also need permissions to these!

There is linked tables, but they are in the same folder - and have excactly the same permissions.

Then my VBA-code uses a few external txt-files to save data, but still they are in the same folder, and have the same permissions.

Try making a new database and importing ALL objects from the original.

OPEN Access, NOT your dB.
Then in the Tools+database utilities menu choose compact + repair. Now find your dB and press OK.

I have a feeling that your dB is CORRUPT :o) and you may not be able to do much about it. But you do have  a backup dont you ?

Same error occurs, when I try com compact+repair it...

And, of course (or by chance) I have backups - one, for each chance in version. But all who uses Access security + users displays the same error.

That why I suspect Access security+users to be the cause...

For fun I tryed to change the name of secured.mdw to xxx.mdw - same error occured.

Its funny, aint it ;-) Specially because I quit from this job on wednesday, and the db is result of a lot of work from a lot of people...

ARE we using Access security? If you are then you MUST make sure that you ARE using the CORRECT MDW file.

Okay - now I tried some funny stuff...

I got a restore of a week old LALA.mdb og Secured.mdw (one week ago the db worked perfect). Then I brought it home to my private PC and tested it...

Same result - error. I've tried to run the one week old db on 3 different computers and same error occur...

HOW CAN THIS HAPPEN ?

I've tried too to put back date in case that there is an date error, but it doesn't help...

You say (I got a restore of a week old LALA.mdb og Secured.mdw (one week ago the db worked perfect).)

WHERE DID IT WORK PERFECT? and does it still work perfect where it worked perfect?

Did you put the week old LALA.mdb og Secured.mdw on your private PC or just week old LALA.mdb?

You MUST use both the original files!

When I wrote "work perfect" I means, I could open the Access db and use it. As written above currently it does not work in any way - I cant open the db...

Regarding the old files. I took both (old and original) files and placed them on my PC, but where they didn't work...

HOW do you open the dB?

If you are using Access security and have a workgroup file (Secured.mdw) then you have to either set this up as the default workgroup file on the PC OR you must open the database using a shortcut. The shortcut actually has to start Access with parameters telling which dB to open and which workgroup file ui sto be used. IF you do NOT do this then Access will be trying to open the default workgroup file.

How do I either set up a default workgroup file or start with a shortcut telling which workgroup file to use ?

THERE IT WAS.... THANKS SO MUCH TERRY...

Because my cached profile was deleted, information about office paths was deleted (thus that path to the secured.mdw).

I opened MS Access Workgroup Administrator and then it worked perfectly after I redifened the path...

Thanks so much - you really deserve the points...
