Strange solution in suns Petstore?

I have looked at the blueprints solution from sun, the petstore.

But I think it is strange that they do not use Frames. Using Frames minimize the traffic between the server and the client, if we just reload one frame instead reloading everything like loggos, menues etc.

The only 2 reason I can se for not using frames is:
1) All old browsers can load the page.
2) The programming may be a bit easier when we do not need to transport request between frames via the session.

I really would like a comment/explanation about this.

Best regards

Frames are often made very badly, which obscures the look and feel of the site.

Most browsers caches the information, so using 1 pages does not make any difference

ALl browsers have different ways of interpreting the HTML specification, specially IE is pretty bad at following the standards.

Pages looks better without frames.

Yes, but if we assume that the browsers would handle frames in a proper way, then I guess that using frame for minimizing the trafic and the rendering of a page in the browser would be the better?

What do you think?

SUN Petstore is a demo application to demonstrate the use
of J2EE technology.

This is a pure HTML issue and not particular relevant to J2EE.

I assume that SUN wanted to make it as simple as possible HTML-wise
and focus on the J2EE part, because that is what it was created for.

I am sure that frames would be used in a real life web application.

I am pretty sure a frame solution would not be used in a real life web solution, due to the problems with them.

Hmm!

This does not make me any smarter.

Can we perhaps list some advantage and disadvantage?

If you do not have a VERY good reason, dont trouble yourself with Frames, they are simply not worth the time wasted on them.

And due to proxy servers, and caching, the performance is no issue anyway.

Disky..
I can't quit follow you - do you say IE is bad at interpreting frames or is that there are many to implement them if you want to cover all browser ???

I have made web applications for intranet where the only browser is IE and they work great with frames - if have to say myself.

IE does not always follow the specifications made by W3C and often uses properitarian tag's that only they understand.

IE does not parse the HTML specially for frames and tables as strong as it should, leeding to pages only viewable by IE, and not by browsers following the standards.

Therefore you should ALWAYS ensure your webpage is compliant to W3C's standard by using their analyze tool on www.w3c.org webpage.

I assume that we all agree that web pages & apps should follow
W3C standards for HTML.

But that does not exclude frames.
