Windows 2000 hang

Hello!

I have a computer with Win 2000 without any servicepacks installed.

When the computer is in state idle (doing nothing) for a while like 10 minutes it hangs.

So now I asking for help, should I update bios, OS, or what can I do.

I have recently plug in a CD-Writer/Rewriter. My Girlfriend has installed DOT.net and we also have a mysql running.

So any suggetions would be great.

Best regards

Hello!

And I can not press CTRL+ALT+delete either. It seems that I have to just shut it off.

Try one of theese to obtain SP4...Start your com and activate ctrl+alt+del- taskmanager-processes  and wait for it to hang again - which process is demanding the cpu?

Hello!

I have now installed the servicepack 4. Strangely I cant see it among add/remove programs but I can se it if I choose Explorer -> Help "Version 5.0 (Build 2195: Service Pack 4)". But the problem is still the same.

When I open the task manager-processes how do I see which process is demanding the cpu. Is that the one that is on top when I sort on CPU?

Is it possible to update drivers for the bios some how, and how can I find out what bios I have and where to download it.

Any tips an would be great!

Best regards

I also have run the windows online update at:
v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp

But the problem is still the same:
1) Every second time at startup it hangs when you se the big windows 2000 log and the blue progressbar is full.

2) When the computer has idle for a while it hangs.

So any suggetsion for how to fix this would be great

open the task manager-processes and se which process i occupying the cpu mostly. look at cpu. if one special process is taking more than 20% of cpu it can be a problem. (don´t care about the system idle process.
I give ýou some links in how to upgrade the bios - you should search for the motherboard name and thereby find bios update. try google.

How is your hardware setup, how much power?
I would also suggest that you turn off the mysql which can be quite heavy- and see if it´s the problem

Hello!
I acctually think that I have solved my mystery with my hanging computer.

My network card was installed too close to my graphics card so my guess is that my graphicscard got overheated. This happend boot with Win 2000 and Mandrake 10.1, but not with Mandrake 8.1.

Now I have changed the positions and got more air in between the cards and the computer has run for 30 minutes now without any hanging.

What do you think? Could it be that easy?

Best regards
