Accessories Frequently Asked QuestionsHow can I install the Data Cable USB?
Solution
Just insert the CD and follow the instructions. Under Windows 98SE/ME/2000 and XP the Hardware Assistant will start automatically, when the Data Cable USB is connected to the PC. Under Windows 98SE/ME and 2000 the installation can also be started by starting ’setup.exe’, which can be found on the CD. The Setup-Assistant will guide you through the installation. Under Windows XP the drivers can only be installed via the Hardware Assistant.
The installation order should always be:
First install the USB driver software,
then connect the USB cable to the USB port of the PC!
To install the software please start the setup file from CD or from hard disk if downloaded (drivers see below). Follow the instructions. After clicking "Finish" the drivers are copied to the PC and the USB cable can be connected. Now the drivers are installed automatically.
To check if the drivers are installed correctly open the device manager by rightclick on Workplace-Symbol on Desktop -> Properties -> Hardware -> Device Manager.
If the drivers are installed correctly, they can be found under "Ports (Com & LPT) -> Siemens USB Data Cable (COMx)" (see picture).
The driver is installed as a so-called virtual COM port. The Device Manager shows which port number is used (in this case: COM8). The software automatically uses the first available COM Port. If you want to use the USB connection with e.g. Siemens Mobile Phone Manager (MPM), choose the virtual COM port that was installed by the USB cable as connection port (possibly the option "Use alternative method of connection" in MPM must be activated). If, for some reason, the Port number must be changed this can be done by opening the properties of the Siemens USB Cable in the Device Manager.
If problems occur after installation due to e.g. wrong installation order, the entry in the device manager should be checked by rightclick on Workplace-Symbol on Desktop -> Properties -> Hardware -> Device Manager. When connecting the USB cable to the USB port of the PC, it is detected automatically and should appear as "Siemens USB Data Cable (COMx)" (see picture). If this entry has a question mark or exclamation mark or if an unknown (USB) device was found, then there was a problem with the installation and this entry should be removed. The device will only be visible if the cable is connected! After removing the drivers, remove the cable, restart the pc and start the normal installation procedure.
