I've been looking for a transparent deployment of the snmp service but no luck.
I really dun have the time to install the service+snmp informant in 500+ PC's and servers before a deadline my company gave me.
I've been using it for a while on a testing enviroment but there was only 10 devices to play with...now im going for the big shot.
I know there are commands to install services from remote locations, but im being challenged by a microsoft solution called SMS server...it installs a client silently anywhere you want (of course killing bandwidth i guess). I would like to offer my company something closer to this and open source.

I honestly don't know and I don't understand why you whant to use SNMP on PC's, it's normally used on servers.
Take a look at MOM (Microsoft operations manager) or some other tool like HP operview or Tivoli. You can get an open source tool also (Don't remember the name)
Finally you might have some luck with SNMP walk (SNMP walker, SNMP walking) it's a mothode not a tool but the tool has to support it. SNPM walking might give you the information you look for.
