Partion and size of harddrive looks strange?
Hello!
I have just bought a new Harddrive at 160GB. I installed "Mandriva 2008" without notice the hardrive size. Unfortenately I mess everything up and I need to install again.
But when I try to install "Mandriva 2008" for the second time I got to go through harddrive partion set up. I selected "Erase Harddrive".
From the first installation there is partions left. sda=63MB hda=147GB
Right now I format the hda6. If I remeber it correct it looked like hda was devided like this: hda1=7.8GB hda_something=3,2GB hda6=137MB
BTW I guess hda1=the Linux OS hda_something=swap space hda6=file storege for "home" folders
Correct me if I'm wrong.
How ever 147GB + 63MB is not 160GB. Where is my missing 13GB?????

I know it's not really a comment that will resolve your problem, but harddrives are never the size they claim to be. It think it is because they calculate with 1000 instead of 1024. So, if 1 kb is counted as 1000 byte instead of 1024 bytes, you will lose quite a few when reaching 160 GB.
But I think every thing was correct at the end after the installation.
With the "Storage"-app in Mandriva I could see that there was a partion 8.4Gb and a partion of 147Gb, (147+8.4 = 155.4, pretty close to 160Gb) The rest is probably for swapping.
I know they "cheat" with the GB's, but I still get mad everytime I buy a new harddrive and see just how much dissapears into thin air.
And you're welcome!
/Susan
