windowsupdate won't work

Help !!!

I try to run Windows Update but I keep getting: "New Windows Update Software Required"

After clicking "Update now" I get "Software update incomplete" after ½ a second. "Send error number to Microsoft (0x800A1391)"

I have the site as a trusted site with security set to Low. I don't use Proxy.

Please advise

ok. I found this solution but I havn't tested it yet. I will let you know how it went later on..

"download the latest virtual machine (Build 3802, dated 1/25/01).

http://download.microsoft.com/downl...US/msjavx86.exe

Windows Update should work perfectly then"

OK.. Problem solved.

Believe it or not, I actually send the error number to Microsoft. Their suggestion was:

- Set IE security to low
- Clean temp files and cookies
- Unregister and delete wuv3is.dll
- Delete downloaded objects

I did that but NADA - It didn't help !

In a desperate attempt, I decided to bypass the company's firewall and connected my laptop to a different ISP through my mobile phone - and guess what... Windowsupdate worked !!!

What I then figured out was that the problem was all along on the Cisco PIX firewall which was set to filter activeX commands, Java applets, and other HTML <object> usages from outbound packets. Once removed, windows update was working again from within our LAN.

What got me all confused there, was that although the activeX filter was set, I did not have problems using windows update on windows 2000 clients at any time. That led to me to believe the problem was OS related.
