About one and a half year ago I bought a Pentium Celeron 800E PC with the following hardware specs:
A Intel 815 motherboard with onboard LAN, Audio, a video card, 128 MBs of RAM, a Western Digital 30 GB HD, a LiteOn CD-burner, a DVD-drive, and a floppy disc drive.
I installed Windows 2000 (in Danish), Office 2000 (in Danish), and McAfee Antivirus (in English). Then I drove the PC to my parent’s house in Italy.
The PC worked fine until I was rang up and was asked why it suddenly stops loading data while starting up Windows 2000, and the user therefore only just sees the desktop. Before this episode there had been a number of lightnings, which resulted in power cuts and three ruined modems.
When I later went to Italy and tried to start the PC, I noticed that there was no problem booting from the floppy disk drive (A:\).

Det var lige starten... Jeg fatter ikke meningen i den sætning du skriver umiddelbart efter stedet hvor min oversættelse slutter og forresten er jeg for doven til at oversætte mere ;)
About a year and a half ago I bought a Pentium Celeron 800E computer with the following hardware specifications: Motherboard Itel 815 with onboard Lan/audio/video card, 128 MB RAM, Western Digital 30 GB harddisk, Lite-On cd burner, DVD drive and floppy.
On the PC win 2000 (danish), office 2000 (danish) and McAfee Anti Virus was installed. The machinen was to be used for office applications and internet access. Afterwards the PC was transported to Italy by car where it was to be used in the future.
It worked fine until I received a call an was asked why the PC suddenly stops during the boot process, not showing the desktop.
What had happend earlier - several times - was the Italy had beed struck by lightnings and power outs due to storms and bad wheather. App. 3 modems has been replaced on this account.
When I visited Italy I found that the PC booted from the floppy drive. This was corrected and the PC rebooted normally. I then expected a normal reboot after this but no, it stalled after showing the Itel Celeron logo and never showed the win 2000 start up screen.
I chose to format the machine - rebooted with the win 2000 cd-rom in the cd-rom drive - win 2000 unpacked just fine but when F8 was to be pressed nothing happend, it just stalled.
I tried another win 2000 cd-rom - no luck - same result.
The a win 98 cd-rom was inserted at the OS installed without problems but alas I did not have the motherboard drivers for win 98 and of course we never received them from the manufacturer - partly our own (my parents) fault. I asked them to contact the manufactorer/sales office in order to receive a cd-rom with the drivers, but they never did.
When I rebooted win 98 it suddely stalled again - the fat is in the fire. I chose to format and reinstall win 2000 this time by moving IDE1´, IDE2 and master/slave on the three drives (HD/cd-rom/DVD) and even removing the DVD drive. Maybe the PC did not get enough power. The modem was removed too. Unpacking the win 2000 went fine but again the boot process stalled at the start up screen...
Noe one may think - if modems are damaged - then this might happen to RAM/harddisk as well. Therefore the next day new RAM (512 Apache PC133) and a Maxtor 40 GB haddisk was purchased.
RAM and HD was replaced and win 2000 was reinstalled and rebooted - no fuss about that. Really nice, then I just needed to get the modem online and download the 30 MB of drivers for the mother board - it took hours using a 56k modem connection.
Every piece of hardware was installed correctly and Norton Anti Virus too. I didn't want to leave the harddisk unpartiioned so I partioned the harddisk (10-30GB) using Partion Magic 7.0. After that the PC was rebooted and it stalled again!!! Showed the Intel logo, counted RAM and... stalled - stone dead - nothing to do about that.
Reboot, turning off power, checking power cord, moving drives, moving RAM to another slot - nothing helped
Maybe it could be the external power supply. In Italy the power supply is unstable - like in Copenhagen at 4 AM when changing to swedish power, the lights flashes for a short moment - in Italy it's just every 10 minutes
The olde HD and RAM was removed, it could not be there the problem was.
Can it be the PSU or the mother board then? Or something completely different?
Now the PC is returned to Denmark in week 48/49 and I'll try to se if I can make it function properly here with all tools within reach. Before that I'd like to know if you have any suggestions on how to solve the problem.
I know buying a new mother board is simple but what if it's not that what do I do with a new (used) mother board for a celeron processor? *S*
Håber det kan bruges, noget af det vil nok ikke óverleve en kritisk revision, men det skulle da fange hovedideen og være nogelunde forståeligt...
