What is Virtual Private Networking?

Virtual Private Networking (VPN for short) is a relatively new concept that is becoming extremely popular as a method of allowing employees to connect to corporate LANs inexpensively. 

VPN allows people connected to the internet to connect to your LAN and utilize resources on the LAN as if they were connected directly.  This can be an excellent way to connect smaller remote offices to a larger corporate LAN without paying for leased lines (instead, the remote office would need only a local internet connection). 

If your corporation has a large number of users that dial in remotely, using VPN technology can save them and/or your company large amount of money previously spent on phone charges.  Instead of making long-distance calls to dial into the network, users can instead dial into local Internet Service Providers (ISPs), then connect to the network via the internet.

Of course, security is a great concern - you don\'t want anyone on the internet to be able to connect to your LAN.  Additionally, you don\'t want those packets filled with private data to be readable by anyone on the internet with a packet sniffer.

Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol

Microsoft\'s answer to the security issues is a new protocol called Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol, or PPTP for short.    PPTP creates a secure, encrypted connection through the chaos that is the Internet - a sort of \"tunnel\" (thus the name).

PPTP is not a method of connecting to the internet - instead, it is a method of communicating over an internet connection.  It is important to understand this distinction - most confusion about  PPTP and VPNs comes from misunderstanding this vital point.

To connect over the internet, the following must happen:

Both the client and the server computers must have PPTP installed.
The server you are connecting to must be connected to the internet via a dedicated or dial-up connection.  This connection must already be established.
The client computer must be connected to the internet.  This is usually through a dial-up connection to a local ISP.
The client computer, once connected to the internet, then uses Dial-Up Networking to start another connection - a PPTP connection to the server.  This connection uses the first connection.
At this point the computers are connected securely, and the client has been authenticated to the network and can work as if connected directly to the LAN.
