well... the way to test it is not through network neighborhood (not yet anyway) because browsing the network is on a higher level and therefore can give errors due to software or service miss configuration rather then network configuration.
try this:
Step 1) open a command prompt and type ping 127.0.0.1
if you get time out or destination unreachable then you have a problem with your TCP/IP protocol and you will need to reinstall it. if you get reply then go to step 2
step 2) Ping own IP (to find your IP you can type ipconfig /all although you should know your IP since you put it there). If error then again problem with TCP/IP if ok then step 3
step 3) do the same on other PC
Step 4) try to ping each other. if ok then the network is fine and the problem is in the software definition or services. if error then most likely that the computers are not connected correctly.
check list: * all computers connect via RJ45 cable (looks like a phone cable only wider) to a hub.
* The uplink port in the hub is not in use
* if you don\'t use a hub the make sure the cable you are using is twisted (usually in a different color the gray) you can check the cable by holding the 2 ends next to each other and see the colors order. a twisted cable will show you the colors as if one end was looking at a mirror rather then 2 of the same color in opposite directions.
ok. a switch is like a hub only a bit more intelligent :) (higher on the OSI model)
if your computers can ping each other then it\'s good news! we have just eliminated 1000 error possibilities.
I will look at the software issue tomorrow (unless you solve it tonight) since I am at work and my 9 operating systems PC is at home were I would like to see for my self the configuration options in win98 and winME (win9x). I can\'t remember it now in my head as it has been more then a year since I worked with win9x.
francke is right that there sometimes a problem with port 1 but that is because it is sometimes an uplink port. either way it shouldn\'t be it as we already concluded that they can ping each other.
if you go into your control panel and the into \"network\" do you have something called \"Microsoft family logon\" listed? if not the install it. if yes then click on \"fil og udkriftdeling\" and put a hack next to \"andre brugere skal have adgang til mine filer\"
you will probably need to restart.
UNDER THE \"Identifikation\" tab on the top, make sure that both computers are on the same workgroup.
MEN men men...
menge tak for jeres deltagelse.
