How to set up a webserver when ip is dynamic?

Hello!

I have signed up for broadband at a company called chello.se.

This service gives me a dynamic ip. But I seem to have the same ip if I leave the modem on.

But what I would like to do is to set up a webserver on my computer, just for developing purposes.

But I do not seem to be able to connect when I type the ip that I see when I do a ipconfig from a computer outside my home. When I am at home I can connect to the computer with the webserver from an other computer.

I tried to call chello and they said that I'm not allowed to do this, but they also said that it is possible. And before I hung up the chello-guy explained that I have to use a "dns to go". (Strange, when it is not allowed.) I guess that they would not go mad if I keep the traffic at minimum and used by me only.

But I do not know what "dns to go" is or how I should use it.

So if any one got an idea how to solve this please let me know. (with or with out "dns to go").

Best regards
Fredrik

i don't know about "dns to go", but about your computer/server: Is it running Windows XP? If it is, you could try and disable the WinXP firewall, and try to call your website again.

Hello!

I use win 2000.

I signed up for a account at www.no-ip.com and it looks like I can reach comuter 1 from other computer 2 at my local network. But I can not reach it from outside. It seems to work the same way like when I just type in the ip-adress.

You guys said something about UDP would that do the trick?

Any suggestions would be great!

Best regards

Hello!

I guess it is not possible since I guess I'm behind a firewall at chello.se that are my ISP.
At the FAQ at www.no-ip.com I found this:

  FAQ

I am behind a firewall can I use no-ip.com's service?

If you are behind a firewall adding a hostname will only make an alias to your firewall and not your individual machine. In order to direct the requests to a computer behind the firewall you must setup port forwarding on the firewall.

The firewall they are talking about must be out of reach for me or what do yiu think?

Best regards

Hello!

No I can not. I have signed up for an account att no-ip with my ip, my webserver is running. But when I call my friend and ask him to try to connect to the no-ip-adress he do not get through.

But I can reach it from my own computers that are inside my own localnetwork with the no-ip-adress.

So I guess that I can give up, or what do you think?

Ingen anledning till att ge upp. Du måste öppna för port 80 på din router. Villken router har du? Är det d-link är där nånting som hetar virtual server, och där måste du acceptera port 80.

Regarding UDP I remembered wrong. The name is DUC.

Please go to www.no-ip, press the "Download" and afterwards "Windows". Here you can download the DUC program for installation on your server. This program will kommunicate with www.no-ip.com and update the connection.

Please be aware of your personal setup at www.no-ip.com.

Hello!

I thought I was the only that speak swedish around this great site ;-)

Acctually I do not use a router at all, I guess?

I just got a computer that I have connect to a broadband modem from UPC (chello.se) through a USB-port. This computer uses win 2000.

I also got an other computer with Linux Mandrake 8.1 connected to the first computer through a twisted TP. From this other computer I can reach my webserver on computer one like:

http://192.168.0.1
http://213.89.81.180
http://fredand.no-ip.info
http://c213-89-81-180.cm-upc.chello.se

But I can not reach it from outside chello like I would like to.

My ipconfig looks like:
C:\>ipconfig

Windows 2000 IP Configuration

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection 4:

        Connection-specific DNS Suffix  . : chello.se
        IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 213.89.81.180
        Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.252.0
        Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 213.89.80.1

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection 2:

        Connection-specific DNS Suffix  . :
        IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1
        Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
        Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . :

My no-ip name is:
fredand.no-ip.info

Michale Stim mentioned that I need to open port 80 at my router. My guess is that I do not use a router, correct me if I'm wrong. Is it possible to open a port on win 2000, if yes how do I do that?

Like czar said I created a output from myip.dk:
213.89.81.180
c213-89-81-180.cm-upc.chello.se
3579400628

An ideas how to solve this would be great.

I will have my webbserver up and running: 2004-12-01 12.00 - 16.00.

try to setup the webserver on port 8080 .. or som other service, ftp or something..

I recall some information about blocked port 80 on some swedish isp..

you should (from the outside) get a webpage with http://213.89.81.180 (if port 8080 http://213.89.81.180:8080 )..

you should be pleased to know, that you can do tricks with gratisdns.dk so the blocking of port 80 is useless ;)

setup a www.domain.se as a urlforward to a hostname called www2.domain.se:8080 ..

it should work..
